This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing children with so much potential for growth. All of them live at poverty level, in an underserved community in the Bronx. Most of my students are reading two to three years below grade level. Two of my third graders are reading at a Pre-Kindergarten level. They are seldom exposed to much outside of their Bronx neighborhood. Because of their academic struggles, many of them do not like to read. Recently, one of my students kept his head down during Independent Reading time. After I tried encouraging him to read a book, he yelled that he was tired of reading baby books. I believe that if my students had access to high interest books at their reading level, they would be excited to read. I want my students to feel excited about learning and reading. I am creating literacy stations in my classroom, where my students can read high interest books that are at their level.
My Project
Please help me to foster a passion for learning and reading through literacy stations. I am requesting high interest series books and other materials essential for setting up effective literacy stations. All of the materials that I have requested and that you hopefully will help my class acquire are for us to create fun and engaging learning experience in our classroom. Most of my students are basketball fans. I can just picture how excited they will be to read books about their sports hero, Lebron James.
I need your help in bringing the joy of reading to my students.
I grew up in similar circumstances to my students. I was born and raised in the South Bronx in a single parent household. I spent a good part of my free time reading at home because it wasn't always safe to play outside. Books, for me, were an escape from my neighborhood. It gave me a window into the rest of the world. I want my students to feel the same love for reading that I did when I was their age. Thank you so much and God bless you.
