Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My 5th-grade students are a remarkable group of learners who consistently show up to school ready to engage in their learning. When we get to reading time, my students are excited to jump into new stories and to expand their skills. As excited as my students are, there are often objections when it is suggested that they try out a longer chapter book rather than their favorite graphic novels.
Through the purchase of a class set of The First Rule of Punk, students will have an opportunity to engage in a novel study as a class, and to expand their identities as readers.
This text is one that has frequently engaged students as they can see themselves and their families reflected in the characters as they learn to accept themselves. With each student having their own copy of the text, students will be able to practice their annotation skills and can learn to cite evidence from the text in our discussions. This will not only build their comprehension skills but also their confidence and identities as readers.
Help me to create a positive reading culture in our classroom and help to prepare my 5th graders for middle school through a text that will affirm their identities!
