Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 21st Century learners, who are eager to use all of the technology available to them! I teach 24 curious, natural born, third-grade scientists in a small, Title I school that has an amazing and supportive principal.

My students are eager to learn, and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them.

Everything is a potential investigation or experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project-based opportunities as possible.

I constantly enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more by infusing STEM correlations whenever possible.

Because of our small school size, funding levels are not as high as other schools in our area. Grants and projects like this one become an integral part of how I obtain resources to supplement learning experiences. I truly believe that the future lies in our children, that they have virtually unlimited potential, and my job is to enable them to reach it.

My Project

With the technology available to my students, they use a variety of applications and programs for Language Arts, Science and Mathematics.

My students love learning, and I provide them with as many different opportunities and avenues as I can to unsure their success.

One of the programs we use, ReflexMath, teaches and reinforces math skills in a fun and exciting ways. As they play the games, concepts are being reinforced and facts are being memorized! Getting this subscription renewed will allow my students to continue the learning they started this year. They will continue to grow mathematically as they play!

The materials I am requesting will inspire learners and make STEM accessible to everyone. Many of my students have never thought about a career in STEM, and I want open their minds to the endless possibilities.

Empowering parents is the key to making this project successful. I plan to invite parents into our classroom to observe students and myself interact with our Kano project. Parents will see me walking around the room, offering guidance, helping with decision making, prototyping, and troubleshooting. To help inspire parents at home, I plan to produce high-quality videos of open-ended engineering design challenges for parents to help analyze and reflect their child’s work at home. This will help build parent competencies to promote Stem learning at home. Involving parents in Stem education is the key to funneling more students into STEM careers.

Computer science is becoming infused into all areas of our lives. I would encourage parents of kids who might feel like science isn’t for them to look closely at a hobby or interest of theirs and find the science, technology, engineering, and math involved. This can provide an avenue to higher education and ultimately to the jobs needed to shape the future of our country.
