My Students
Hi, I'm a lower Elementary, Montessori-trained teacher within a public school. My students are curious, enthusiastic, and eager to learn. Many of them come from low income homes, but this doesn't stop them from coming to school with smiles on their faces. I am proud to be a part of an urban school district that offers Montessori education as an option to all families. It is amazing to see how my students can progress academically through this hands-on approach to learning.
My Project
Two years ago, our school moved to an early start schedule, which means that my students return to my very hot, third floor classroom in early August. On hot days, my classroom is well over 90 degrees.
When we moved to the early start calendar, I set up a hydration station in my room with a large water cooler, reusable cups, and an ice maker.
The setup has become an important part of our classroom, especially during the hottest months when staying hydrated is so important for my students. My ice maker recently stopped working, and my supply of reusable cups needs a refresh. This project would replace both and allow me to continue providing ice cold water to my students every day.
The benefits of plentiful cold water in the classroom are threefold: (1) hydration, which has been linked scientifically to improved focus & memory, (2) more time for learning by greatly reducing the number of trips down the hall to the drinking fountain (aka bubbler) and (3) cold water tastes really, really good when you’re really, really hot.
In addition to providing easy access to cold water, the hydration station also allows my students to build their independence, a key piece of the Montessori philosophy! Not only will they be able to get their cup, fill it with ice water, and enjoy a cool drink, it is also a part of our classroom job chart. Daily jobs include filling/refilling the water cooler and washing the cups.
