Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at an elementary school in East Hollywood. This year I am teaching a very enthusiastic and smart 5th grade class! They enjoy reading, math, and using technology! We are consistently using whiteboards and technology and are trying to limit our carbon footprint. Most activities I assign are placed through on a platform where they can answer questions, submit work, practice math skills and test! They also enjoy using whiteboards to show their thinking strategies. My students are avid coders and are always looking for ways to show off their skills!

My Project

Recently we have been working a lot on white boards. I use them to model math strategies, to answer questions and to practice for their spelling tests. They enjoy using them especially because they can answer privately whole class or within a small group, all the while being held accountable for their input and learning. The class is quickly running out of dry erase markers and it has gotten pricey.

We have also been looking for words in the dictionary during our reading response time.

We have read three chapter books and have done book studies on them. I have recently given them the task to do the words in their response journals independently. I have come to find that many of my students do not know how to use a dictionary. I have some students who ask to borrow the dictionary for homework. Unfortunately, I do not have many for them borrow.

Please help my students continue to thrive in their learning by helping us get these much needed items.
