My Students
Students in our Science and Society senior elective examine various societal issues through a scientific lens. A major goal of the course is to teach students how to evaluate evidence, and then use this evidence to form opinions and arguments.
Our students come from all walks of life and every zip code in the city.
Our school, therefore, is a diverse amalgam of people who have all come together to learn. Our school follows a project-based and inquiry-driven model, which often requires students to ask their own questions, and then answer these questions. Our students, therefore, are very inquisitive, curious, and interested in learning about how the world around them works, and what their role is in the larger scheme of things.
My Project
Your Inner Fish tells the story of the discovery of Tiktaalik, the "fish with hands." Neil Shubin, the co-discoverer of this fossil, uses Tiktaalik as a backdrop to illustrate how the evolution of land animals, including humans, has progressed over the past 375 million years. My students will use this book as a basis for our discussions on evolution - not only to brush up on the science they've learned in previous classes, but also to look at evolution through a societal lens. We'll have in-class discussions and other activities based on the readings, and all students will complete an end-of-unit project to demonstrate their knowledge of evolution, and their insights into how evolution impacts society.
When I first read Your Inner Fish, I was fascinated by the stories Shubin told about how the human body came to be.
By reading this book, my students will also be exposed to these stories and the underlying ideas behind them.
Additionally, since Your Inner Fish is written in a very approachable manner, my students will be exposed to a wonderful example of science writing - and this will hopefully motivate them to read more books in the science fields.
