Our school has an enrollment of 1500+ students of which 34% are economically disadvantaged. We have a balance of 52% males and 48% females, with our minority population at 52%. Our school is in a suburban area, built in 1970 with strong school spirit and ties to the community. Our school has an unusual percentage of teachers who graduated from here and returned later to teach. I jokingly warn the new ninth graders about drinking the water! Our school community is a close-knit group that looks out for each other.
My Project
At our school we are aware that there are some students who struggle with the necessities in life. The things we take for granted like food to eat, shampoo to wash our hair, a home to go to at the end of the day with a bed to sleep in at night, they only imagine. We realize that when the weekend comes, these students in our building, are worrying about their next meal. They KNOW they have food Monday through Friday at school, but the weekend is a struggle, and don't even think about week-long holiday breaks. We decided to create a private pantry in the back of the main office for these students that have a need. On Friday, they can "shop" the pantry privately with a teacher or faculty member to collect a few things to get them through the weekend.
With your donations, we fill up our pantry in our school with non-perishable items for our economically disadvantaged students to "shop" from before a break.
We give them a backpack, they select a few items to get them through the weekend, and then on Monday they return the backpack. The pantry is filled with Chef Boyardee Mini Bites, Velveeta Shells and Cheese, Campbell's Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup and Chunky Beef Soup, and Quaker Instant Oatmeal Express Cups. Thank you so much for considering this project and helping us fund our Pantry for our students that are struggling. We couldn't do it without YOU!
