This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
First grade should be part of a long and happy journey into the amazing world of reading. Unfortunately, this is not always the case for special needs students who struggle with reading from the very beginning. Due to these struggles, they may shy away from reading books.
Let me introduce you to 12 bright-eyed first graders.
Ten boys and two girls enter my classroom, located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, eager to learn and tackle the challenges of the school day. Despite their disabilities, each and every one of them is working hard to become successful students.
My Project
It is important from this early age, that my students develop a love of books and embrace reading. They enjoy read alouds and love stories being read to them. Due to their disabilities, they struggle with letters, sounds and sight words. Having a leveled library with fun exciting books will help these students read appropriate books at their level and encourage them to love to read! A new appropriate library will help them overcome these challenges. They will become more confident readers and feel successful.
Successful reading is the key to all learning, and it is imperative that students embrace reading at an early age.
Special needs students try so hard to overcome their reading challenges. It is vital that they have as many resources available to help them become confident readers. A new library will undoubtedly help build their self-confidence and provide them with the ability to read independently and develop an everlasting love for reading
