My Students
I teach a group of amazing, curious, and hardworking special education students across Kindergarten and first grade. My students have a range of disabilities, some of which include learning disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional disturbances, speech and language impairments, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Like any other class, my students' abilities and interests range across a wide spectrum.
All of my students require individual or small group attention; each day, I incorporate all of their learning styles, interests, and special education accommodations into our lessons.
Some of my students prefer visual or auditory cues for learning, while some require a more kinesthetic or tactile approach. My students come into our classroom each day with a love of school and a desire to grow as a learner.
My Project
This year, in the wake of so many unknowns in our school, my students have continued to grow as readers. Each day, they come to school excited to take out their "book baggies" and read a multitude of stories about a variety of things. Some of my students are reading up to twenty books per week.
Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 protocols, it has been difficult sharing books from the library at the rate that my students are finishing books and jumping reading levels; I am requesting new books so that my students have access to more books.
There just are not enough books for students, especially with how quickly my students are reading. With the current protocols, when books are finished, we "quarantine" them before another student can read them. My students are reading so many books that the book quarantine process has stalled the timing in which my students are able to get new books to read. With access to new leveled books, we will be able to read more each day and continue to grow as readers and learners!
For young students who are progressing in reading each day, this is frustrating for the students and as a teacher. My students' thirst for knowledge and more books to read is inspiring. Thank you in advance!
