My students need binders, 12 books about Washington D.C. and various scrapbook supplies, including a 3-hole punch, markers, construction paper, glue and scissors.
I teach 10th grade DC History in a public charter high school. 100% of my students are African American and 95% of my students come from Wards 7 and 8. This is unfortunately one of the areas most plagued by crime and poverty in the District. The resources available to the students in surrounding areas are not afforded to my students--resources that many of us take for granted.
I am always looking for extra resources and thinking of creative ways to present the material to my students. Last semester, my students completed a project where they had to go out to a new part of the city and learn about the history of the neighborhood, unique landmarks, restaurants, and other interesting places and bring back artifacts. After learning about their assigned neighborhood, they created a scrapbook that represented all of the neighborhoods in the District. This was a huge success--students who had never been four metro stops from their own neighborhood finally experienced a new part of the city and new people. I know this project could be even more successful if we had more resources to use! This is where you come in to the picture!
By having a variety of books on various aspects of Washington, DC and scrapbook supplies for their Experience Our City projects, my students will learn so much more about their unique city. The books will also be written on a level that they will be able to understand. Our school is a college preparatory academy, so these books will increase their literacy skills, which they so desperately need in order to be prepared for college. My students are on average three grade levels behind their peers in higher income areas, so we have three years to boost their reading levels up to an appropriate level so they can compete in colleges and universities across the country. These books will be invaluable to this end. The scrapbook supplies will allow them to complete their favorite part of projects: the creativity aspect!
Please help make this wish a reality and give them a chance to create a project they can be truly proud of while increasing their literacy skills.
