This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a speech language pathologist at my school. Many of the families are of a lower socioeconomic status and a majority of the parents of my students are Spanish speaking. My students all have speech and language difficulties, as well as being English language learners. Despite their challenges, my students are always eager and enthusiastic about learning!

My Project

Can you imagine how difficult your life would be if you did not have enough vocabulary in order to communicate your daily wants and needs? My speech and language students have difficulties with vocabulary and formulating sentences.

My students receive speech and language therapy in a public elementary (K-5) school in NYC.

Most of my students come from low-income families who cannot afford books or outside tutoring. Many of my students are also English Language Learners. Due to their Speech and Language Impairment, they struggle with understanding and using vocabulary. This impacts their ability to succeed in their academic classrooms and socialize with their peers.

This Expanding Expression toolkit will provide my students with visual cues and manipulatives that will help them expand their language and ability to describe vocabulary, given explicit and systematic instruction. This will help them in their verbal expression and writing skills.
