My students need an inviting reading area that has plush carpeting along with five seats and four Disc O Sits for comfy seating that will entice them to kickback and read a good book!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Creating an environment that encourages a love of reading is key to my goals this year for my fifth grade students. In addition to supporting them as they develop into proficient readers and writers, I want to inspire my fifth graders to become life long learners who posses a zeal for reading.
Charming, curious, and challenging are just few words that describe my tenacious fifth graders.
I may be biased, but they are truly a special group of students that deserve the world. We are just one grade level in cozy elementary school (K-5) situated in an diverse and urban city. Like our city, the backgrounds of the students vary in terms of ethnicity and social economic status. However, they all come from homes that want the best for them and that trust that the school will meet their academic needs. Overall, we are small Title One school with a dedicated staff who diligently works towards providing students with an excellent educational experience.
My Project
My priority as a literacy teacher is to promote independent reading at home and to embed independent reading into the school day. I envision the library carpet and seating enhancing our current classroom library area. Students visit the classroom library regularly to check books to read in class and to take home. They also use the library during center time and small group instruction. This is when the resources will get the most use. Students will be able to sit comfortably in the library as they read, discuss, and share books during center time.
Your donation will help encourage students to read independently in a comfortable and inviting setting.
Engaging in independent reading regularly is key to improving fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills. Enhancing our classroom library will help to promote a practice that improves students' academic skills in hopes of providing them with a brighter future.
