This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Whether it's the scribbles of toddlers or the artwork of teens, I believe very much in the importance of displaying student work in ways that respects their talents and efforts. This is why I would like to have the resources to display my students' writing stages and progress through out the year.

I teach 4-5 year olds in a self contained Kindergarten classroom.

My students attend a large public school and come from low income households. Most are learning English as a second language and are attending school for the first time. Although they lack experience and language they first arrive they love to express themselves through their writing and illustrations!

My Project

The magnetic paper pockets and clips will allow me to publish the students' writing year around in the classroom for the students and parents to view. Even the most reluctant writer will want to have a writing project that is published in the class for everyone to see. I also hope that children can play both the roles of author and audience to other children's pieces. Instead of questioning the teacher, they can question each other for clarity of meaning. Children as authors use the ideas of their audience when revising their writing. As audience, they have the opportunity to see their ideas used by other students in their revised stories. Shifting from author to audience and back encourages children to become perceptive writers.

A classroom filled with the work of children is a delight to be in and sends a message to students that their work and their learning are important.
