I teach K-8 dance in various styles. My classes are made up of a very diverse population. We are a fine arts magnet school which means we receive students from all over the city through a lottery process. This means my class is made up of a variety of different ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic backgrounds and also includes diverse learners.
The students do not have to test in or audition so there are varying dance abilities in each class.
Students learn ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop, tap, swing, Bollywood and how to choreograph their own dances.
Each year we have two performances where classes present some of what they learn in a dance usually part of a collaborative theme.
My Project
After teaching remote dance lessons to K-8 grade students in the spring, I learned that there were some technical issues that roadblocked my students from having the best experience possible. Sound and lighting is a huge issue when teaching dance. Many students expressed that it was difficult to see my movements, expressions and hear clearly the vocabulary as well as the music.
Dancing in your own home can bring challenges, but having proper lighting and sound for the best visuals and audible directions can help.
After some research on how to teach successful virtual dance classes, two components came up repeatedly. Sound and lighting. Airpods are suggested for dance teachers as it allows me as the instructor to give audible instructions while moving at the same time. This is key for dance as I often give instructions and encouragement as I dance with my students and demonstrate movement. Instead of having to shout, speak right next to my computer OR use a bulky microphone, the air pods will help students to hear instructions more clearly while allowing me to move freely and play music.
Sometimes I will be teaching at home and sometimes in an empty classroom. Both locations do not have the best lighting and I end up showing up blurry and dark on camera when instructing virtually. The use of a ring light can easily give an instant, clear picture for students when I am teaching live OR creating instructional videos for them to practice on their own time.
