About My Students

Stevie, Michael, and Jose want to show the 8th-grade girls that they can lead a project for STEM supplies also! Our last project was lead by 8th-grade female students . It's exciting to see the 7th-grade boys taking a lead in this endeavor.

The students got the idea for this project when they heard that our grant for a Maker Space in our library was denied. They were looking forward to having hands-on educational materials in our school. We have 6 Makey Makey's, K'Nex & Lego's, but, that is a small start for a Maker Space. They researched what other schools had in their Maker Spaces and learned about the little Bits Kits. The more they read about these kits, the more they wanted them.

There are several social-emotional skills that I want my students to learn as they utilize these kits. One, they need to learn to work independently as they design and create. Sometimes, I think my students depend too much on teacher instruction and don't have enough self-confidence in themselves for different types of learning. Besides learning independence, I also want my students to have more opportunities to work in pairs and/or groups. They need to learn how to interact with their classmates in different scenarios. They know my expectations for a science lab, but these kits would provide other group educational experiences.

In Their Own Words

Our 1st goal is to have more materials in our classroom and in our school that let us do fun and educational activities. Our 2nd goal is we want to prepare for high school. Some of us are applying to magnet high schools. We would like to have the same access to technology that our friends in private schools have. The 3rd goal is to use this in our science choice class. This is a new class and we have completed almost all of the lessons. We want to help our teacher find lessons that we like!

The 3 of us saw some projects on the little Bits site that inspired us. This year's service learning project is creating a "PSA" video for the school on "How Litter Affects Our Watershed." The 1st thing we want to build with the kit is a machine that will pick up litter. Some our classmates want to try and invent self-watering plant containers. Our plan is to have the inventions on the PSA video. This will teach our school why we shouldn't litter, AND how to invent with the little Bits kits.

One of the reasons that we want the little Bits kits is because we want to use them for our service learning projects. We saw some videos of kids our age who used these kits and created items for their projects. Every year both 7th and 8th-grade classes pick a year-long service learning project. The students pick the projects. This year we created our science fair projects based on our service learning projects. The little Bits kits will help us for both the science fair and service learning.
