I teach two groups of fourth grade students. Our district is in a low income, rural, economically depressed area of Pennsylvania. My students may be economically disadvantaged, but they deserve the same learning experiences as all other students across the United States.
Sixty-two percent of my students receive both free breakfast and lunch, as well as backpack food every weekend.
Our school runs this free food program because our students wouldn't have enough food to eat throughout the weekend, away from school if we didn't step in and supply it. Being a child today is not an easy task. Despite these many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they will be successful students.
My Project
I have two non-English speaking students within my classroom. Communication is extremely difficult, and having a device that the children could easily access to speak and interact directly with these two children would be a wonderful addition to our classroom. It is heart breaking to watch them struggling every day to try to communicate simple information to their non-English speaking peers. This iPad would empower and enable them to truly interact and connect in a much more meaningful manner than what is currently occurring.
Please consider helping me help my students connect with each other; social interaction is so very important right now!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
