My Students
Teachers often complain of unfair testing and curriculum for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, especially in reading comprehension. Our school for the deaf has chosen to implement the Fairview Learning Program in 2015. Fairview's design incorporates strategies documented for reading success.
Deaf and hard of hearing students, as well as students who have received cochlear implants without good follow-up services, continue to score below grade level on formal reading assessments.
Our school has implemented and then discarded many different reading intervention programs over the years. There are five principals for effective reading instruction; comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonics and phonetic awareness. We need to continue to close the gaps existing between our student's current functioning levels in reading and the grade level expectations that they are tested on yearly. Most of our students have very limited phonetic awareness skills to apply when reading. The Fairview learning program has a phonemic awareness component using pattern seeking cues that we feel could help our students. So often, teachers have had find ways to adapt phonetically driven reading programs developed solely for hearing students for use with deaf and hard of hearing students.
My Project
The Fairview Learning program incorporates the five principals of effective reading instruction, but it also incorporates additional strategies for instruction in five specific components. The first component in Fairview uses the Adapted Dolch word list, but due to multiple meaning words in American Sign Language (ASL), they have expanded the 214 basic Dolch word list into an list of 510 signs that elementary deaf or hard of hearing students need to recognize. In reading comprehension instruction, Fairview incorporates "Bridges" or English phrases that are expressed in ASL as a single sign or compound. It also incorporates phonemic awareness, literature based instruction and ASL development with the expected outcome of spontaneous written English. Fairview's materials provide the opportunity for small group instruction with the teacher as well center activities for independent practice.
After receiving an overview of the Fairview learning program, it is the belief of our school's administrators and the elementary/middle school teachers, that implementing the Fairview Learning program at our school will help to close and/or lessen the gaps we see in our student's grade level reading ability.
In efforts to offset the high cost of staff development with this program, we hope this project will provide the funds for some of the Fairview instructional materials that we will need.
