This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you picked up a calculator and realized how much easier math could be? I would love to give this opportunity to my students. In addition to helping students become more successful in math, there are some units that are impossible to learn without a calculator!
My students are 11th graders.
My students primarily come from a disadvantaged, minority background. A vast majority of my students receive free or reduced lunch. They wake up extra early to commute via public transportation to our charter school in the downtown area. My students hope to break the socio-economic bonds which have limited the success of the people in their community for several generations.
My Project
As 11th graders, my students are spending a lot of time preparing for the SAT and ACT. They are allowed to use calculators on these exams, but unless they have calculators that they are familiar with, these exams will be much more difficult than they need to be.
My students deserve to have the same opportunities as other students in our city.
Having the ability to use and navigate a calculator is a vital skill that my students must have success with before they leave for college.
