My Students

My special education students come to school every day with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. They are eager to please and to work hard. But from the moment the bell rings, they struggle. Academics do not come easy for my students. Many struggle in all areas: reading, writing, and math. They fall farther and farther behind their peers and their confidence dwindles. Although there are many possible reasons for this, one cause is clear.

The challenge is poverty.

My special needs students attend an elementary school that has the most students in poverty as well as the most English Language Learners district wide. We are a Title I school where greater than 80% of our students receive free lunch. Our school has some of the greatest teachers in the district, but our test scores show that our students are still below district and state averages. Furthermore, our school has a low graduation rate and studies show that the risk of dropping out of high school starts in elementary. As teachers, we want the very best for our students, but we are faced with heavy challenges.

My Project

My special needs students struggle with basic reading skills. Many of them have the desire to read, but are uninspired by the selection of books in the current classroom library. My students will often ask me, "Do you have any new books?" My younger students have a tendency to judge books by their covers, so my students are unmotivated to read the old, secondhand picture books that are at their disposal. Many of my students would rather sit quietly and wait for reading time to be over instead of actually spending that time reading a book!

My students need high interest picture books to engage them and get them excited about reading.

My students will be so excited to have brand new high interest books such as "Where the Wild Things Are," "Pete the Cat," "Stellaluna," and "Dragons Love Tacos." These new and engaging books will help motivate them to read! In turn, the increased access to literature will help them build their literacy skills. Another challenge is having a child-friendly way for my students to access the picture books. Standard bookshelves are hard for young children to access. Books are shelved with the spines facing out, but children want to see the book's cover! With the LANKUO Kids Book Rack Storage Bookshelf, my students will be able to easily choose a book to read because they will be able to see the picture book covers! This simple child-friendly book rack will help my students select books quickly and easily, and get them reading much faster than a standard bookshelf.
