My Students

I walk into my classroom every morning with a smile, because I know that soon my students will be walking through the door. We greet each other with smiles because we are excited to be at school. That's what first grade is about, being excited to learn. Our classroom is a diverse place. We have different cultures, languages, a wide range of academic and economic groups, but we all learn to celebrate our differences and it is beautiful.

One of our classroom sayings is "we can do hard things"!

We say this every morning to remind ourselves that even when life and school are difficult we can still grow and believe in ourselves. I am amazed everyday at what my students accomplish in just one year. Many students come to first grade not knowing their whole alphabet and they leave readers!

My Project

Having a classroom library that includes books with diversity and inclusion is so important. In first grade, we are working hard in our classroom to understand the world around us and one of our favorite ways to learn is through books. Not only will these amazing books give us an opportunity to explore different cultures they will also bring representation to students in our class. There is no better gift I could give to my students than to see themselves and those they love represented in characters in the books that surround them on a daily basis.

Our classroom needs to be a safe place where everyone feels welcome and included.

One of the best ways I can do that for my students is to have books that include their cultures and languages in them. School is so much more than just reading and math. School is one of the first experiences these young people have in working together with people other than their immediate families. I want to help build their global awareness so that when they leave our classroom, they are people who recognize and celebrate each other's differences and love and care about others and the world around them.

I have chosen books that incorporate different cultures, countries, languages, and characters with different abilities. I will put these books in our classroom library and my students will have full access to these books at all times. I have no doubt my students will love and cherish these books and they will help us become more aware of the world around us.
