My Students
My students are an amazing group of kids. About half of them come from our local neighborhood in West Philadelphia, and the other half from all across the city. All in all, we have students from about 40 different zip codes!
We are an urban, neighborhood school with a very large low-income and special education population.
The students here chose to come to this school because they wanted to try a different style of learning, one that is hands-on and project based.
At our school, we focus on five core values: Inquiry, Research, Collaboration, Presentation, and Reflection. Students also follow our three school rules: Respect yourself, respect others, and respect the school as a place of learning. All of our units in every class culminate in a final, student-driven project, and we strive to make our lessons and projects as real-world based as possible.
My Project
Help stock our Makerspace! Our school is moving into a new building, and we are finally getting the space for a true Makerspace. In this space, I want to expose my students to a variety of different formats of making, from low tech to high tech and everything in between.
One of my goals for this space is to create a digital fabrication and entrepreneurship program for my middle schoolers.
With tools such as the Cricut die cutters, my students will learn the skills of digital design, create their own projects, and eventually develop a small business around their creations.
This year, we're starting small with creations that can be sold through our school store to raise funds for other projects, field trips, and more. Over the next few years, I would like to expand out beyond our school and have the students offer their creations to the wider world. This DonorsChoose project is one of the first steps along that path! Please help us begin creating our digital fabrication studio at SLAMS!
