About My Students

The seventh grade students at our rural Eastern North Carolina school are focused on getting to and through college. They are excited to grow their knowledge, and to develop the skills necessary to be successful later in life.

They work with urgency and grit to reach their goals, and they truly understand that their work and learning is never done.

They are eager to make a difference in their lives, the lives of their families, and in their community as a whole.

My students will develop both academic and social-skills through this project. Academically, they will increase their literacy. Once they build their reading ability, they will be able to be far more successful academically. The various reading levels of the books which they selected reflects the fact that there will be growth once they begin reading regularly. This is which is critical for their success in higher education. They will develop the the skills of teamwork and real-life problem solving through working on this project, as they will physically build the library together, create a list of books, and a system for checking out the novels. They have also taken the initiative to solve a real-life problem they experience at our school. Learning to problem-solve and developing self-advocacy is critical for success in life, for college, and in any career field. Their development of these skills will truly be invaluable for their success throughout their lives.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to get books so that our classroom can have a better library. Our class library right now does not have many books, and the ones we have are old and not very interesting. We want books that we are excited to read, but our school does not have the money to buy them. This project will allow us to have the ability to practice reading, which will help us to be more successful in our lives and on tests which emphasize reading, like the ACT. We really need new books to accomplish this.

We will work together to build the library once the books come in, developing a system to borrow the books, and managing the library as a class. This will require us to work together as a team and to develop our leadership skills, as we develop the system. Once we have the books and have created our check-out system, we will have created our very own class library. This is exciting because we will have created the whole thing by ourselves, and we will get to benefit from it ourselves too.

This project is important to our class and to our school community, because it will provide us with materials that we need to learn. Our school faces the problem of a lack of funding and a lack of resources. We are willing to work hard to be successful but need the resources to do so. Funding this project will provide us with the materials we need to improve our reading and to get excited about reading. This will help us to get ready for college and throughout our lives.
