About My Students

I am excited that my students took the initiative to problem-solve and find a way for our class to build a library. Jada, Ja'Mya, Enrique, Logan, and Marco all brainstormed and thought that creating a project through Donors Choose would be the best option for our class.

Our class library is small, and has been built by purchases made exclusively by me, and donations of books from community members. Recently my class was discussing the fact that our library has few books and how we could solve this problem--they are interested in reading, but there is nothing for them to read. One of them asked, "Could we raise donations for books?" After some class-wide discussion, my students researched ways to fundraise and quickly came across Donors Choose. They then decided collectively that a student-led project would be the best option to get the books we need.

My students will develop both academic and social-skills through this project. Academically, they will increase their literacy. Once they build their reading level, they will be able to be far more successful academically. The various reading levels of the books which they selected reflects the fact that some of them are reading below grade level. They will develop the skills of teamwork and real-life problem solving as they work together to physically build the library together, create an inventory of our books, and design system for checking them out. They have also taken the initiative to solve a real-life problem they experience at our school. Learning to problem-solve and developing self-advocacy is critical for success in life, college, and in any career field. Their development of these skills will truly be invaluable for their success throughout their lives.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to get books so that our classroom can have a better library. Our class library does not have many books, and the ones we do have are old and not very interesting. We want books that we are excited to read, but our school does not have the money to buy them. This project will allow us to read more often, improving our literacy, which will help us to be more successful in our lives and on tests which emphasize reading, like the ACT. We need new books to accomplish this.

We will work together to build our library once the books arrive, and to develop a system to check out the books. This will require us to work together as a team and to develop our leadership skills as we develop the system. Once we have the books and have created our check-out system, we will have created our very own class library. This is exciting because we will have created it by ourselves, and we will benefit from it directly.

This project is important to our class and to our school community because it will provide us with materials that we need to learn. Our school faces the problem of a lack of funding and a lack of resources. We are willing to work hard to be successful but need the resources to do so. Funding this project will provide us with the materials we need to improve our literacy and to get excited about reading. Developing these skills will help us in college and throughout our lives.
