Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Please help me bring life into our playground. Our play area is a dry, boring, and lifeless slab of concrete. There is one play structure that serves 30 TK, 60 Kindergarten students, and 15 third graders (who use our playground for extra curricular activities).
I teach in an inner city school in Los Angeles.
For most of our Title I and low socioeconomic students, gardening and outdoor play is non existent. With budget cuts deeply affecting our instructional materials and class size increasing to 30, these students will face a harsh school year. Equipment that is required to develop their gross and fine motor skills is virtually nonexistent, due to insufficient funds.
My Project
Many of our students live in apartments, where opportunities to spend time in the great outdoors (much less work in a garden) are few and far between. The garden at our school will give our students the chance to learn extremely important lessons through hard work, patient observation, and hands-on activities. I have requested two raised garden kits and two active world tray vegetables so my students can plant and tend to a large vegetable garden and work toward a project goal.
By contributing to this project, you and Disney Planet Challenge will bring students an experience they might never have outside of school.
You will help our students see a life outside of video games and TV: a world where they can grow, learn, and create. These resources will help students at our school for years to come as they learn the beauty and magic of bringing a garden to life!
