My Students

Help our students breathe in healthier, cleaner air!

Our school is considered a large inner city school in California.

We have over 1000 students ranging from Pre-K to fifth in both regular and special day classes. Most of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged and all of our students participate in the National Free Lunch Program. Our class consists of 18 first grade students. Among them, 11 students are English Learners. All of the students are eager learners and they fill up the classroom with excitement and energy everyday.

My Project

Due to budget cuts, we do not have enough custodial staff. Therefore, I often need to sweep the floor and our classroom rug in the morning to prepare the room for the students. With a broom, I could remove some large objects from the rug and the floor however, sweeping often kicks up dust and ultimately moves it around to settle somewhere else. Since I teach young, primary grade students, I do most concept lessons while the students sit close to me on the rug because I need their full attention. Recently, there have been more frequent interruptions during instructional time because I have to redirect the students’ attention when they pick at small particles such as small stones that cannot be removed sweeping the rug. To help them focus on what they need to learn, those distractions need to be reduced as much as possible.

We spend about a third of our class time on our rug so we need a vacuum cleaner that could remove dust quickly and effectively to ensure that our students are protected from breathing in dust and allergens that settle on the class floor.

I believe a healthier environment promotes a better learning experience. Especially for young children like my students, breathing clean air could eliminate or reduce a lot of potential causes for diseases such as asthma. Please help us keep a cleaner classroom!
