This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been teaching for 23 years and I can truly say that I still love what I do. I teach all of the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students the NYC scope and Sequence for Social Studies. It is a large undertaking, but I do it with please. Teaching Social Studies to these great kids is truly rewarding. I use art, role play, music, images, video clips, documents and artifacts in. my lessons. Basically, I incorporate every domain of teaching to get my students engaged and excited about social studies. I do all this just to see that sparkle in a student's eye or that light bulb go off, that is my reward.
My Project
Many students in my school have social emotional issues due to traumas and/or their present stressful living situations. Many of these issues stem from economic stressors. They are in shelters or living with relatives. Some of their parent are out of work. Still other students have seen and/or continue to see violence and aggressive behaviors from family members on a daily basis.
My hope is that through this training, I can learn how to deal with my own stress and feeling overwhelmed, so that I can teach my students those same strategies for their life.
We have students in my school that do not know how to deal with their frustration, stress, anger, etc. Unfortunately, most of these students wind of developing aggressive and/or destructive habits and behaviors at school. These students often are the same children that are labeled as having behavioral issues. They are frequently in the Dean's office, having their parents called or being suspended from school.
Lastly, I also would like to teach other teachers and staff the same strategies on our professional development days. Maybe I will even have the opportunity to teach parents these yoga techniques on Tuesdays Parental Engagement Days.
