My Students

My middle school students are amazing, energetic, and outgoing! These students are held to high expectations to be the best version of themselves: working collaboratively to demonstrate teamwork, sharing up to date information, utilizing the latest technology, and providing encouragement and support to each other as they face challenges to meet Common Core Standards (CCS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

My incredible seventh-grade students come to school early and ready to learn about science and technology in the world they live in.

They love to interact and engage with the world around them through hands-on investigations developing models, communicating in team problem-solving discussions, class question-and-answer posts, as well as using evidence to argue pros and cons in debates. I want to make sure they have the tools as well as the skills to obtain any goal they set for themselves.

My students come from diverse backgrounds. I teach at a Title 1 school in Chicago where most of our students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Many of our students have special needs or are English language learners (ELLs). Despite their hardships, these impressive kids achieve above and beyond the standards set at this 1+ ranked school!

My Project

A protractor and compass are tools needed to help students learn about angles and circles. Those skills are not limited to only mathematics. While building and constructing experimental designs, students rely on these tools to find the height of objects, the angle needed, or the distance between two locations.

Incorporating Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is the path to college and career readiness.

Students are learning to engineer investigations that connect scientific topics with mathematical connections using technology. We conduct experiments and labs to enhance the ideas and concepts from the text to the world they live in. These connections are essential for students that have limited background experiences. We apply probability in genetics and statistics within ecology, using both a computer model and hands-on method to predict from a collection sample. We also utilize graphing and measurement during investigations in ecology and learning about the human body.

Although these tools are located on supply lists, they are items that are often forgotten and not brought to school. These tools are used in my classroom as often as crayons and colored pencils, yet students do not have them. This grant will ensure all students are ready to participate and design!
