This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember that smudged piece of loose-leaf paper that you worked on for hours and how it never looked the way you wanted it to? Remember how uninspired you felt because of it? That's how my students feel about their writing all the time. You can help change that!
My students are all at-risk, Title I students, for most of whom English is a second language.
Growing up in a very tough inner city area, most are at a disadvantage before they even start school. There are few positive role models who have used education as a stepping stone to a better life. Statistically, slightly more than half will graduate high school, and far fewer will finish college. While they do try, most just can't seem to see the excitement in reading and writing, and I'm trying to change that.
Engaging my students has become increasingly difficult in this era of personal electronics, with every kid's head buried in texting, handheld games, and game consoles. In trying to inspire them to write, I want to literally bring technology to their fingertips. I want them to have access to all that is out there on the Internet, as well as have the computer literacy they will need to be competitive and successful as they go through school and into the workplace.
My Project
Having a combination color printer/scanner/copier will help open my students' minds to the endless possibilities of publishing their various types of writing. No longer will a report be sloppy handwriting on lined paper, but rather, a document with pictures inserted in it, wrap-around text, and brilliant color. Creative stories can be illustrated, the pictures scanned and inserted, and interesting fonts used to design storybooks. A class book of poems can be printed and copied and shared with families as keepsakes for years to come. Research reports, signs, posters, recipes---you name it! The list is endless!
Having wireless abilities will make it possible for us to use the laptop lab that visits us weekly. Instead of manually putting their files onto a flash drive and then onto our class computer for publishing, they each will be able to just click and print from the machine they are working on. With this ease comes excitement, and that's where you can help.
You can help make a kid look at his or her work with pride.
You can help a reluctant writer suddenly be excited about writing something and creating it with care to the best of their ability. Knowing there are people in the world outside the classroom who care enough about them to help would mean the world to my students and me. You can help get rid of the frustration caused by those smudged pieces of writing on loose-leaf paper. Please donate now!
