I am so excited to begin the new year! I will have a new group of little ones to motivate and inspire. They do not realize yet but they are readers, writers, scientists, historians, artist, mathematicians and musicians! Working together they can succeed and learn to love school.
I am excited to meet my students and learn where they are from.
Every year we become a more diverse group of learners from all over the world. Many of them are first or second generations Americans from Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Ghana, Guinea, Mali and other diverse countries that makes our classroom so special as we learn from one another. My school is a Title 1 school so the children do not bring many supplies or materials to the classroom. They do bring enthusiasm, a desire to learn, respect, kindness, and a sense of wonder. Watching them as they work in cooperative groups, supporting each other and learning new things is the most wonderful experience.
My Project
I have decided to focus on helping my children develop their English language this year. I am eager to help them grow as they share with others when they speak and write. We will be writing many times this year: poems, letters, stories, informational text, persuasive letters. We will write our drafts with paper and pencil but I want to be able to publish and share their writing with others when appropriate. They will write books about farm animals for kindergarteners, research the solar system, and publish poems. The texts should be done in color and laminated so others can read them throughout the year.
The first grade writing standard, 1.W.6 states, "With the guidance and support from adults use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing in collaboration with peers." I have the software and a computer to guide and support them.
I am asking for help with the supplies to publish their writing so they can meet the standards, be motivated, and take pride in their writing.
