My Students
My students attend school in the South Bronx every day for a chance to improve their current skills and to continue to succeed! These are all children who come from low-income families and have special needs, specifically autism. Many of my students are non-verbal, facing challenges daily of communicating with peers and adults at school, as well as with their family and friends at home and in their community. These students receive therapy (speech-language, physical, occupational and/or counseling) multiple times a week, either individually, or in a group. Each child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which requires all tasks and activities to be adjusted and changed based on the skills of each student. My students are always appreciative of new materials and items they receive!
My Project
Each session my students work on improving speech and language skills to enhance communication with others, as well as, to increase independence.
My project is a mix of basic supplies to create individualized teacher-made resources for students, as well as, tools, such as, interactive activities and games, which will be used in speech therapy sessions.
By using laminating sheets and velcro, I can create individualized work tasks to use during group sessions, as well as, visuals to use with those who require non-verbal cues and reminders. On the other hand,Osmo is a fantastic tool to integrate technology into our sessions to help increase engagement in learning while learning to share and work together.
