Students enter the classroom and go back into time to explore the most significant events in American History. We study journals, photographs, and government documents; and by the end of the class period, we can confidently declare ourselves historians.
My students are special needs and English language learners who struggle with reading.
They love learning about history, but reading about history can be challenging for them. Visuals are a great way to grasp their attention and really get them engaged in the lessons. Many of the students come from low economic backgrounds and do not travel often; and therefore, do not know much about the different places and people of America.
My Project
Since my students are struggling readers and newcomers to our country, the document projector would be an invaluable way to bring history alive to them. We can travel back to the building of the railroad, take a trip to the Grand Canyon, and march with the Suffragists through photographs. We can map out the route of the Western settlers, and view the division of America during the Civil War through maps. We would view the faces of World War II soldiers and feel their determination and bravery. While learning history, it is vital to see it from the people who lived it.
The document projector will inspire students to love history.
It will make students ask questions and want to learn more. Words cannot explain history the same way a photograph can. Students need to see the emotion on the faces of the past.
