My Students

"Math is so hard, confusing, and boring!" Did you ever utter these words or know someone who did as they struggled to learn math facts or solve a word problem? Help squash this feeling in students while saving the environment. You can help two causes at once!

My students live in a low socioeconomic area, but are trying to beat all odds.

Some of them do not have the means to purchase multiplication flash cards, yet they truly want to be successful in learning multiplication facts. Many of the parents do not speak English and the language barrier makes it difficult to assist their children in conquering math word problems, yet these students delve into these problems with a paper and pencil in hand doing their best to solve them.

My Project

My students need math-related materials such as Write and Wipe Pockets, Multiplication Madness Game, and Multiplication Machine to become successful in math and promote the feeling that math can be fun. The students currently fold paper to take timed tests. Now they can use the pockets which will save time by wiping them off instead of folding. The fun comes in when they can use a marker instead of a pencil. You would be surprised how much the kids enjoy that. The Multiplication Madness game is a game. It is a fun way to help find factors; another important skill. The Magnetic center will help them manipulate the objects to better visualize how to solve word problems. The Multiplication Machine will leave more of a visual imprint and help cement the facts in their mind. The Problem-Solving Kits will offer plenty of opportunity for students to see how solving word problems will be useful to them. These will help students be in charge of their own learning all while saving paper since these products are reusable.

Let's take the paper and pencil out of math by showing these students how fun and useful math can be.

These materials will motivate students in an area that can be so daunting. Teaching students in a way, that is in addition to using pencil and paper, gives the students more opportunities to succeed. Saving trees by reducing the use of paper has been a goal in our class. So, this project is right up our alley. Any opportunity to go a bit more "green" also motivates these students.
