Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to start a new school year and be excited to start learning? Do you remember learning how to read? My students have just started to learn how to read and are loving every minute of it.

I am an elementary school kindergarten teacher in a high needs school in New York.

This year is my second year as an educator at my school. I teach approximately 15 kindergarten students in a general education classroom. My students come from an area that was highly impacted by hurricane Sandy. Most of my students were without heat, water, power and food for almost a week. Some are still without heat. My classroom is in desperate need of a listening center to help my students become better readers.

My Project

This is the first experience these students have in their education. I would like to provide them with a listening center where the children can come and listen to a story. I feel the listening center will help to develop language skills and a love for reading. Children need to be read to, and with a listening center I can help make sure each child receives good quality literature to help develop their vocabulary.

I believe that students learn better with hands-on experiences.

A listening center and books will help teach those skills in a fun and engaging way, and will be used year after year and touch so many students' lives.
