Help Us Become Better Readers With Amazon Fire Tablets!
My students need tablets for small-group guided and independent reading, which will be used with KidsA-Z, and will give them access to hundreds of leveled books.

My Students
First graders have a lot to achieve at such a young age and in just 10 months. In order to be on grade level, their reading needs to go up 5 levels, which is the most progress required out of all the elementary grades. Their writing also needs to greatly improve by the time they get to second grade.
My students always help and support each other, whether or not their teachers explicitly ask them to.
Because they are in our school's French Dual Language program, they will stay together throughout at least the 5th Grade, and have already developed a great sense of classroom community. Our French Dual Language program allows NYC school children (K-5), whose families may not be able to afford expensive French private schools, to learn (for free!) in a bilingual environment, which no doubt will give them an extra edge later in life. As their first grade teacher, I strongly emphasize reading and writing in English, as I do not want them to fall behind, while at the same time teaching them to speak, read and write in French.
My Project
The tablets will be used along with our school's subscription to KidsA-Z (formerly known as Raz-Kids) to help motivate students to read "just-right" leveled books. Level reading is one of the best tools to help students progress in literacy, including helping improve their writing. The 8 tablets will be enough to use during small group guided reading, where students will read and discuss a text (which can be on a relevant topic for science and social studies) together with the teacher. Guided reading has shown to greatly improve students' reading levels.
Although we do have some sets of books for guided reading available, we do not have a great selection. Being able to use those tablets along with KidsA-Z will greatly change that. These Amazon Fire tablets also come with the possibility to download hundreds of free educational apps, which can support students in math, science, writing, and French. As an added bonus, they include a camera which can be used for class projects.
By becoming better readers, first graders also become better writers.
By the middle of first grade, with the Common Core Standards, students are required to read and solve math problems, and read and respond to fairly advanced literature. If they are not on grade level in reading, they will quickly fall behind in all areas. I want to give my students the best chance at succeeding, and in the first grade, that begins with the love of reading.
