Edutopia.org estimates that in a typical classroom, one students uses 833 pieces of paper per year. We can use touch screen tablets and worksheet pockets to minimize that number. I want to teach my students how to operate in the digital age where less paper is a reality though digital assignments.
My students are hard working and, like many students today, they love technology.
Technology is engaging and can provide an avenue for problem solving like nothing else. Using the technology available to us right now, I have seen the engaging effects of digital programs, quizzes, and use of visual media. My goal is to replicate that student engagement and allow more students to access technology at any given time during the school day.
My Project
While we know that our classroom cannot be completely paperless, we do strive to use less paper. Using touch screen tablets through our class website, digital forms, digital surveys and quizzes, blogs, and a variety of other tools, we can do our part to use less paper. Being able to navigate digital tools is a necessary skill for students in the 21st century.
We love the use of digital tools but we also understand that sometimes we can't avoid using paper in our classroom. The dry erase worksheet pockets and markers will allow me to make far fewer copies since we can repeatedly reuse the practice materials in each small group and in each class.
Students love a reason to access technology, especially in school.
The tablets in this project will allow them the use of technology while also building skills necessary for success. In addition to the academic benefits, all of the materials included in this project will have a larger environmental impact by allowing us to greatly reduce the amount of paper and copies that we use on a day to day basis.
