My Students
Our program serves children who are identified as at risk and children with identified disabilities or delays. My classroom currently is a mixture of children who are 3 and 4 years-old. I have a very diverse group of students in my room - socioeconomically, ethnicity, English Language Learners and ability level.
For most of my students, this is the first time they are away from home for an extended time each day.
I pride myself on creating a safe and comfortable environment for my little ones to grow and bloom.
I believe very strongly that play is the way the children in my classroom learn best. I also strongly believe that early intervention is the key to success for the children in my classroom. We spend the vast majority of our day exploring and playing. Of my 15 students, 11 are expected to move on to Kindergarten in the Fall.
My Project
One thing I have noticed through the years is that children do not play the same way I did when I was a kid. We were always outside playing, very rough and tumble. In classrooms today we're noticing that children have some trouble with balancing and movements. Every day we do some basic stretching activities and other exercises that focus on building that core strength. I have found that adding these movements to our daily schedule has helped us make some great progress not only in balancing skills but in school skills too! When we take care of the basic needs of movement, kids are able to attend more easily to classroom activities!
We work on developing not only academic strength but motor and sensory strength.
All three of these work together to help the whole child succeed.
With these Teeter Poppers, pogo jumpers and balancing boards, I will be able to have a movement center open every day so my students can work on their balancing skills. Along with these stronger balancing skills comes stronger core strength. Along with strengthening muscles, they'll also be getting some very important sensory input. Some children need that jumping input as well as the spinning they can do on the balancing boards.
These new toys will provide learning opportunities as well as opportunities for to build muscles and sensory balance.
