I teach Environmental Science to 10th-12th grade students at a high school in Maryland serving mostly low income families.
The class is very activities-based, with students completing at least 1-2 labs per week. In these labs, students practice important science skills like generating scientific questions and hypothesizing. At the same time, they learn about environmental issues that directly impact their lives. Frequently, the labs my students do involve collecting quantitative data. However, I do not have access to calculators, so students have had to do all data calculations by hand, taking up valuable class time that they could be using to analyze and draw conclusions from the experiments.
My students need a class set of scientific calculators in order to be able to analyze their data so that they can focus more on interpreting their results, a science skill that is important for them to practice.
