Help Us Add Color to Our World!

My students need one set of quality coloring markers, 6 sets of oil pastels, and 10 sets of watercolor pencils to complete their guided drawings for the entire school year.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Ruiz's classroom raised $338

This project is fully funded

I teach 5th grade students who are currently identified as Learning Disabled in areas of Math, Reading, and Written Expression. They are also receiving services for Speech Impairments and Occupational Therapy. I work closely in the classroom to support them when working with grade level materials. During resource, they are pulled out and we work closely on individual goals that need refinement and mastery. A lot of our time is used to work on improving fine motor skills in handwriting and typing.

All of my students have poor handwriting and are supposed to receive Occupational Therapy to improve these skills. They all hate handwriting practice and the usual fine motor exercises have little appeal because most activities involve activities they perceive as kindergarten things to do like rolling clay, cutting circles, etc. They have no confidence in their writing and gasp if classroom teachers assign them to draw for projects or assignments. Most still draw stick figure people and pictures show little imagination and poor coloring, what I call "scribble scrabbling."

I brought to this campus prior knowledge of "art therapy" and have begun a weekly lesson on the elements of shape and guide my students in drawing pictures that tie thematically to season, curriculum or literature. I help them to see the shapes of objects and encourage them to practice things like smooth range of motion, coloring within the lines and in one direction, using texture and pattern, and building confidence in their own abilities. At the end of every lesson, each student has their own black marker drawing that they can add color to. The typical classroom marker do not help with their limited fine motor skills and often create messes out of their hard labor. I would like them to have the opportunity to work with quality materials so that they have their own fine works of art.

Your help will ensure that my students are provided with opportunities to improve their skills in so many different areas. This opportunity would be given to them without using worksheets or workbooks and will engage them to want to become better at everything they do.
