Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a small school of just about three hundred students in grades 9-12. We are located in the South Bronx, although our students do come from neighboring communities within the Bronx.
More than 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
We also have a several dozen students that are homeless or doubled up. These students do not have easy access to school supplies and basic essential supplies a teenager might need to thrive and succeed.
Thankfully, these students could get a strong start at the beginning of the school year if we are able to provide them with basic supplies that they might need.
My Project
When you do not have access to basic supplies such as deodorant, soap, and nail clippers, it is extremely difficult to focus and learn. This is a problem we have seen for years at our school with many of our students, especially those in temporary housing, shelters, or doubled up with others.
Knowing that you have access to soap, deodorant, and other personal care and hygiene projects can alleviate so much unnecessary stress from a high school student.
Together we can make a difference in student learning by addressing basic needs so that my students can focus on their learning.
