Help Urban Debaters Attend a Summer Debate Institute!

My students need funds to attend the Mean Green Comet Debate Institute where they will live on a college campus and hone their skills in competitive debate!

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Jouya's classroom raised $1,000

This project is fully funded

My Students

Every single student on the debate team has dedicated dozens of our hours before and after school working on honing their skills, researching, reading evidence, practicing speeches, and, of course, debating against other schools at tournaments. That hard work has paid off in a major way, our middle school team is ranked 2nd in the nation and our high school squad has just won the Kansas City Championship!

We are a school-based debate team located in the heart of Kansas City's urban core where we strive for academic excellence and prepare students for collegiate ambitions.

Our school demographic make up consists of 99% "ethnic/racial minorities", 75% of which are considered "economically disadvantaged".

There are many challenges that our students and their families face in order to provide opportunities for co-curriculars - summer debate institutes can be quite expensive but they're the best way to have students connect with college programmes and get noticed enough to earn debate scholarships.

My Project

Students who attend Summer Debate Institutes will be divided into small groups for instruction on library and Internet research, rebuttal effectiveness, argument construction, cross-examination, time allocation during a competition, and a plethora of other topics. They also spend many hours researching the set debate topics and are assigned partners for debate practice. This will also include tournament competition and simulation. Students will give practice speeches, rebuttal rewrites, participate in several speaking drills, and compete in over 20 practice debate rounds. Further, students will be able to network with collegiate debate coaches from all across the nation that is capable of disbursing significant scholarships. Students will learn skills necessary to become more competitive debaters, to learn to think more critically and advance their college readiness.

Most importantly, simply living on a campus and simulating the college experience will help students easily adapt to college life when they graduate, making them far more prepared to acclimate to college life in comparison to many of their peers.

Several universities have actively stated that debate is the first extracurricular activity they look for in aspirant students. Additionally, the concepts of advocacy, argumentation, logic, and guided inquiry are skills necessary for aspiring community leaders. Surveys have shown that 92% of all federal and state congresspeople have competed in high school speech and debate. Moreover, thousands of grassroots activist organizations have been created by former debaters where the activity first exposed them to the subjects they became passionate about.
