My Students

In my first year of teaching 6th grade science at S. Middle School, I am looking forward to creating a classroom environment that is comfortable and engaging, where students are able to work together, learn from one another, and become invested in their learning.

My students will come to me with minimal formal science experience.

Many haven't had the opportunity to complete lab experiments, explore what science has to offer, and devote a serious amount of time and energy to being scientists. Working together in a positive classroom environment will give students the opportunity to reach high standards, and stay engaged in their learning.

My Project

With tables in their classroom, instead of desks, they will be able to complete classroom activities and lab tasks by working together in groups. This not only improves the opportunities for higher achievement in science, but also helps develop 21st century skills such as communication and collaboration. They will also use clipboards to get outside the classroom, to discover what our area has to offer for young scientists.

By changing the classroom environment from more individualized learning, to a group setting, students will learn skills such as collaboration and communication, and will be able to tackle tasks more difficult than they could on their own.

They will share their diverse perspectives and pool their knowledge and experiences, and will have the opportunity to hold each other accountable for a high quality of work and behavior.
