Creating Equality, Caring for Tomorrow's Leaders
My school is located in the poorest congressional district in the United States of America. While my students face adversity on a daily basis, they are indeed tomorrow's leaders. I have an amazing groups of first graders who are performing far beyond their six years. While most teachers are struggling to help their low achieving classes, I struggle to provide my students with the materials they deserve to help them become the best they can be.
A few of my students have computers and Internet access in their homes. But for the overwhelming majority, school is their only contact with the technology many of us take for granted. Currently we have one working computer and within the past few weeks have been able to connect to the internet. While this has been an amazing addition, only one computer for a class of 18 is painfully limiting. After taking an interest survey, I assessed 65% of my students have strengths in technology. And while they are extremely flexible with their use of our computer, sharing and working in harmonious collaborative groups, it simply is unfair. Unfair to see how much my class is missing by not having more access to the materials they deserve; unfair to watch only two or three children enjoy activities while the others listen from afar; unfair that somewhere children are able to access technology freely while my children can't.
With the current state of our economy, public schools have felt the belt tightening. The budget has been cut so deeply, teachers are required to find the resources to make copies and supply paper. The resources my students desperately need include a basic Compaq desktop computer, a router to enable the connection to the Internet, a box of paper for the children to print and some ink for our current printer. With the addition of another computer and a router, my students will have twice the access to the one tool crucial for success. By doubling their ability to utilize this tool, my class will be able to extend their learning, investigate and explore without the wait and limitations.
Computers are no longer a luxury, they are a necessity for success in school and the future. Please help make a bright future for these children. Although they are not from the most affluent homes, I know each child in my class has the potential to be something powerful, someone influential. In order to see this happen, my kids desperately need the most basic tools. Your donation can help bridge the gap for these kids.
