Help to Update Classroom Library for a First Year Teacher!

My students need 40+ new books to complete our classroom library as well as an audio player with headphones to listen to stories during our listening center.

My Students

Many of my students come from homes where they only have a handful of books available to them. I would love to introduce my students to a large variety of stories that they may have missed out on. I want to help my students to fall in love with listening to stories and eventually reading books.

This year I teach in a classroom with 25 energetic Kindergarten students.

Although our days are busy and fairly noisy my students are engaged, eager to learn, and love listening to stories. We come from a rural town in Maine where many of my students are lacking books at home and some have never even heard of authors as big as Dr. Seuss. Many times throughout the day after I finish reading a story aloud my students are begging me to read "just one more." I love that as a teacher I am influencing this love of reading and I would be thrilled to give them more. By having these books my students can listen to a larger variety of books as well as learn about great authors such as Dr. Seuss, Kevin Henkes, Eric Carle, Mo Willems, and many more.

My Project

With the 47 books my students will have a chance to explore new titles. I will have a large variety of read aloud books that I will be able to use to make writing come to life. I will use my big books to teach high frequency words, choral re-reads, making inferences, and engage young readers. Although I am a first year teacher, I was lucky enough to inherit a collection of cassette tapes and story books for a listening center. The only problem is I do not have an audio device available to allow 4-6 students listen to a story. The cassette tape/CD player and head phones would help bring literacy into my classroom in a new way. It will also give my students a chance to independently work on strategies such as comprehension. After listening to a story my students will be able to complete tasks such as drawing and writing a sentence about the characters, their favorite part, what happened at the end of the story, etc.

This project would benefit many children for years to come.

The classroom library in my room is outdated and needs new exciting books to enhance reading. Having a literacy center will be exciting for the students. They love listening to stories and this will give them an opportunity to be able to do so even if I am busy leading my guided reading groups.
