This year I am teaching science and social studies to up to 75 students each day, many of whom want to be scientists or engineers when they grow up. We are a STEM school and spend much of our time on PBLs (Problem Based Learning). This means we participate in hands-on activities on a regular basis. I want to make an active, engaging environment, but we need supplies.
These third graders are from a variety of backgrounds, inquisitive, and intelligent.
They throw all of their energy into our activities, prompting me to continuously look for the next "best thing" out there to spark even more interest.
My Project
Students will be working cooperatively with critical thinking skills to solve clues from our Problem Based Learning activities to unlock a variety of locks to "break out" of a box (i.e. solve the problem). We currently have a couple of boxes, but we are looking for two more boxes. I have requested a variety of locks to use for a variety of clue types (4 letter words, 5 letter words, 3 and 4 digit numbers, key locks) and lockable containers to use during the Breakouts.
Students remember lessons like this the most.
Students feel like they really are participating in a "Breakout" scenario while solving real-life problems and simultaneously demonstrating mastery of content. I have been working to purchase locks as I can; however, it is taking too long and too much money to collect everything I need. Can you help?
