Poverty, dilapidated housing, high crime rates, traffic gridlock, and dirty air... these are all things that come to mind when you talk about inner city urban schools. My students beat the odds each and every day they step foot in my classroom. My students take what life has given them and come with a creative mindset each and every day. They see the problems and want to change them. They want to make a difference in the world and leave a positive footprint in society.
My students become engaged and see what the world has to offer them when they come into my room.
Science opens up a world of possibilities for them. The students get to come into the classroom and see what is beyond the 2-mile radius surrounding their house. Their eyes are opened to the majestic and powerful events that make our world.
My Project
The Butterfly nursery and Aquaponics kit will allow my students to be able to see life happening inside the classroom. They will get to experience events that they may have only seen on television or in textbooks. These materials will allow my students to be able to engage with the life processes and watch the interactions between plants, insects, and their environment.
Students need to be able to touch, see, feel, and interact with nature.
They need to be able to connect with the material and experience all that our world has to offer. Babe Dioum once said, "In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand and we will understand only what we are taught".
