My Students
My school is located on the Southside of Chicago and is dedicated to working with students with moderate to severe disabilities ages 16-22. Our school is a transition center that assists students in gaining practical experience in a variety of settings including vocational, independent living and social learning. Students work in their vocational classes at our main campus to gain useful skills and then are able to attend our other campus which offers on the job experience in a variety of settings in our students' communities.
Some of the classes we offer are carwash, cafe, retail, horticulture, and custodial.
Students also have the opportunity to work at many different job sites within their communities. My focus for my projects will be in the area of art. Art allows my students to express themselves in a new and creative way. We have just expanded our art program to two classrooms and are diving into new forms of art including graffiti, metalsmithing, mosaics, printmaking and much more.
My Project
My students have been working to make mosaic pots, mosaic house number signs and mosaic coasters for their homes. My students all have disabilities and the current tile nippers we have are too hard for some of my students to use. We need tile nippers that are easier to use so all of my students can have the opportunity to complete the projects from start to finish. I want the students to all be able to break up the tiles, plan out their projects, glue to tiles down and grout their work.
My students want to bring home artwork to share with their families.
