My students need a new heavy duty electric pencil sharpener, since an ordinary pencil sharpener would break down, and our heavy duty model is all worn out.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help! We killed our heavy duty pencil sharpener!
I teach kindergarten, and most student work is done in pencil. We have a perennial problem keeping our pencils sharp. In a recent year I bought 3 electric pencil sharpeners, and all of them broke. They broke even if I did all the sharpening myself, rather than allow students to use the machine. Ordinary pencil sharpeners just don't cut it for a kindergarten class. Donorschoose.org donors were kind enough to fund a heavy duty pencil sharpener for the class in 2005. Sadly, that sharpener has now worn out, and we are in desperate need of a replacement.
In addition, the size of pencils used by kindergarten students affects the pencil sharpener we need. Some beginning writers need to use pencils that are much thicker than the standard size so that they are easier to grip. These thick pencils don't fit in an ordinary pencil sharpener, whether electric or manual. The small hand-held sharpeners some students buy contain razor blades, which are a safety hazard.
A solution to our problem does exist. We need a new industrial strength, heavy duty electric pencil sharpener that adjusts to fit thick and thin pencils. If we only had one of these sharpeners in the class, we could worry about what we're writing rather than how to get a pencil sharpened!
