Fresh off a win at the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues' national championship, our already under-resourced team received the devastating news that Chicago Public Schools would be cutting our funding for this school year in an attempt to balance their budget.
Our competitors have large debate budgets and get to take for granted the resources that our debaters have to personally fundraise for, but we are still winning!
So far this year, our debaters have already secured three bids to the prestigious Tournament of Champions and have been finalists at national tournaments like the University of Michigan and New Trier High School where they compete against teams from the most elite private and public schools in the country.
We need basic debate supplies to keep the success going. Legal paper and pens are used to take notes during debates. Timers help the debaters keep track of their speech time while speaking. The tripod is used to film speeches so that debaters can analyze what to do better next time. Finally, a glitching or dead computer can mean game over for a debater so we need a reliable computer with an extension cord to keep it charged.
