Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is filled with wonderful jugglers- we've been working on circus skills every spring for the past four years. But this year might be different. We just discovered that our juggling balls have been eaten by mice!
Each year my students eagerly look forward to spring because it means that the circus comes to school.
Well, really, they become the circus! Learning juggling is a huge eye-opener for these children who come from severely under privileged back grounds. Our school is in a ethnically diverse neighborhood full of very recent immigrants from China, all over Latin America, and several Arab countries. These families often come to the United States just to provide their children with educational opportunities. This means that our students are well loved and well supported, but rarely have any resources and live in very limited space.
But this doesn't stop our circus performers from excelling. You'd be amazed to see our children embracing the thrill of learning to juggle- something they NEVER imagined they would do. Thier enthusiasm is fabulous. Juggling makes them proud and believe in their abilities to master skills through practice. Skills like speaking and reading English.
My Project
This year should have been no different- come April we would break out the juggling balls and the determined practice would begin. We would all laugh on our way to understanding how working hard on something will allow us to achieve it. BUT- when I was moving the crates in my closet, a ton of seeds fell out of one. The mice had discovered that our old juggling balls were filled with something edible. It must have been quite a feast for the past seven months. After cleaning up and sorting through the remains, only twenty-two balls remained unbroken. And considering our class have twenty-eight students in each, that's not even enough for each child to have one, let alone three balls to work with.
My students are broken hearted. Juggling is one of their favorite special activities at school.
Please save our program.
Because of all of the deep budget cuts (a total of 17% in the past 2 years) our school cannot afford to replace the juggling balls. Without your donation their won't be juggling. The students won't feel the pride of honing a skill, they won't learn the concentration that a fast coordination activity takes, and they won't have as much fun as they learn. My class will be filled with very sad clowns. (And fat mice.)
