This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a campus librarian in New York City. What is a campus librarian you ask? It means that I am a librarian for three high schools that are all on one campus. Each school has a different vision, but students use the library as a place to learn, hang out, play video games, check out books and argue about manga, use computers, do homework, and print various projects.
The library one of the places in the school where all schools mingle, and they can hang out with adult supervision.
Students come from all boroughs of New York City and the library allows them to socialize after school and before school. One of the best ways to mingle is thorough games and not the computer kind I am talking about board games. We have two games that are loved and played all the time: Uno and Exploding Kittens. While we aren't meeting in person now, these games would be ready when students are able to return to the library.
My Project
In non-covid times, my students have open access to the library before school, after school, and during lunch. During open access, my students come to play Uno or exploding kittens, read books, or hang out. By playing games, my students will learn or apply collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills—all of the "soft skills" needed for success in life.
The library provides a safe place for students from all schools to interact and experience fun.
Social-emotional learning doesn't just happen in structured ways or the classroom; it can happen across the game of Exploding Kittens.
After school in the library, playing games offers students a place to mingle with students of all ages and schools. You could say we got "game" in the library.
